It is totally playable. I might add that it has a very nice sound to it. It really barks in the lows range (though not a as deep or wide sounding as id like) and sings in high range.

The valves, though not in tip top shape, are quite responsive if well lubed. (also very quite, thank god!). There are no leaks anywhere on the instrument, on 1 major and a many minor dents. The laquer (not silver) has seen better days. This was a school tuba before i owned it, which probly accounts for the general ill appear of the horn. But aside from appearance, it rocks to play on!! I bought it for $1000, im sure i can get a least that much back... (I hope)

By the way, would you know anything about changed the bells on horns? I would really like to have a wider sound, and the bell flare is really far too small for this. Would changing the bell mess with my intonation? Or is it advised to not change the bell at all?

Thanks for your time
