all sorts of interesting variants made in the past, but the "normal" 6th valve these days is a "long" half-step which is in tune with the 4th valve...in effect a CC tuba 2nd valve

Purposes:

- ultimate fine tuning of F# & B natural below the staff (6-4)
- possibly a better choice for low A (5-6-4)
- superior fingering for low Ab (6-2-3-4)
- superior fingering for low G (5-6-3-4)
- alternate "brassy"-sounding (for voicing purposes) fingering for low F (5[pulled]-6-1-2-3-4)
- alternate fingering for C below the staff (6-2-3)
- possibilities of facility of many 1/2 step trills (too many possibilities to list)
