Certainly no hometown library has every book anyone would want (although, with inter-library loans, you can usually GET just about anything you want). But the selection is broad rather than deep. Yes, if you want to do in-depth research on law, music, medicine, etc. you'll be better off going to a specialty university library. But last weekend, my family went to the library. My daughter got two novels and the Michael Moore book (she just wants to be fair, and hear the other side), my son got a Tom Clancy novel and some science fiction, and I got a book on gardening (and didn't find any adequate books on Microsoft COM programming). I've found political books representing all sides of debates, books on every hobby and craft from auto mechanics to zither construction -- no, they don't have 'everything' but they have a pretty good REPRESENTATION of 'everything'.

Joe Baker, who thinks that the library's breadth makes it legitimate.
