It's funny you bring up this divide between the practitioners and the theorists. Where I went to grad school (the names will be withheld to protect the guilty) there was a very strong divide such as this. The problem was there were actually two music departments. There was the graduate school of music (academics)and there was the XXXXX XXXX School of the Arts (performers). Of course we performers had to take our history and theory courses with the graduate school of music profs along with all the musicologists, theoreticians and composers (of music noone ever really wants to listen to - some of whom knew surprisingly little about music and the instruments they were composing for, but somehow got into the grad school. They must have done well on their GRE's, which thankfully I never had to take.)
Anyway, it created alot of BS&T for this poor old performer who had to write papers for these profs.
