I think that ignorance plays a large part in that thse weird looks...I am in college now and several people that I am in ensemble with hae never heard a real tuba solo or even realize that it can be a solo instrument.
Also, look what most people play...people want to play the trumpet, drums, violi or flute...not the TUBA. Its kinda like how I orignally started paying tuba, the band director in Middle School asked whose parnts owned a van and woo hoo I am a tuba player.
Just remember that we can do it louder and lower than anyone else :)
