Referring again down to Joe Baker's post of May 7 (Problem with Overblow) and his statement "For me this is the only place I can go where I can say 'I enjoy playing tuba', and not get weird looks", I want to ask what has puzzled me all the time.
Why the heck are tuba players the main targets of jokes and weird looks in the large family of instrumentalists? It can't be just the polka oompah cliché, since some other horns in such brass bands widely emphasize rhythms as well.
It would be quite interesting to once investigate when (historically) the 'weird looks'
came up and why. I see much of justified dedication and pride within this board, but why is it so hard to find external shares?! Folks don't seem to know how orchestras or bands would sound without pedestals.
