It sounds like you handled both situations well. I would have done 2 rehearsals only for the Sleeping Beauty gig.
I would have found it offensive though that some ringers were brought in AND PAID but I wasn't. If you are young and are doing it for the experience, that's one thing, but to be an older and more seasoned player, it's an insult.
