...it's very easy for the horn sound to get lost, especially when a quintet uses drumset, as many do these days. Ditto for the tuba. While having the tuba on the left (facing the audience)can make it harder for the rest of the group to hear the tuba, what the audience hears is ultimately most important. Horn on the right, tuba on the left will result in the best balance. If you play a British style EEb, then horn on the right, tuba in the center, with a slight turn towards the audience. As far a the horn sound is concerned, these suggestions are based on a group that plays toward the audience, and not sitting in a string quartet style box. While that is the most traditional, I feel that audience interaction is more important than Imagine everyone facing forward, with a slight turn towards the center...trumpets and trombone aiming at the center of the back wall. Standing in this fashion, the horn will be aimed just slightly back, and won't blare in anyone's face.
