The best discussion I ever read was by the great trumpet player Claude Gordon. He uses the method of tonguing advanced by the great trumpet player Herbert Clarke and also used by the tuba great Bill Bell. Get "Brass Playing Is No Harder than Deep Breathing" in which Gordon explains that the tip of the tongue should never rise above the bottom teeth and that the front center of the tongue and the sides strike or touch the roof of the mouth in a different place for absolutely every pitch. Some professionals may say they use a different method, but Gordon's seems to be the best--he could play an 8 octave range on his Bb trumpet. Bill
