Not sure you can call the composer of Civil War songs "We Are Coming, Father Abraam, 300,00 More", "That's What's The Matter" and"There's a Good Time Coming" a racist. He certainly composed " Ethiopian Melodies" and plantation slave songs for the "vulgar" minstrel bands like the Christy Minstrels;the country was pulling apart , there was a strong sense of nostalgia that permeated the culture.Foster wrote great words and melodies for his time.It certainly is not appropriate now to sing some of his lyrics,we don't even play Dixie and that's as it should be.But Foster deserves a good and rightful place in music history.
