There is no doubt a good bit of hacking goes on when a "colleague" is asked to do a critical review. That, of course, is unfair.
A critical review doesn't have to be similar to what is in the newspaper where one has to look very hard, and then take out of context, to find something nice that was said. A simple stating of likes and dislikes about a performance is all that is called for.
There have been all too many reviews of solo performances at conferences, in my opinion, that were blatantly false. Either the reviewer didn't hear the same things others heard or was too afraid to say so.
