The process for applying these kind of labels to surfaces is usually "screen printing." The older name is "silk screen printing," but now very fine metal mesh is frequently used; thus the more general name.

The screen is prepared via a photographic process. A solid substance will block the screen in the areas where no ink is desired; otherwise, the screen will let through ink. The screen is placed on the surface to be printed; ink is placed on one end of the screen, and a squeegee is used to wipe the ink across the entire screen. The ink penetrates where the screen is open, printing onto the underlying surface. For durability, an epoxy-based ink is frequently used.
