Last summer I traveled to Baltimore and took my Yamaha 822 F in the molded case that came with the horn. I packed some foam in the case to make sure that the horn wasn't moving around in the case.

A good way to make sure that airlines take care of your stuff is to start asking about insurance and the airline's liability with luggage. I spent about 10 minutes at the gate asking every question possible about their liability. I explained that my horn was worth thousands of dollars and that repairs are not cheap. I was pleased to see that when they loaded it it was put on last and they were careful with it.

Basically let them know what they are dealing with and that you will hold them liable. Also, make sure to get the name of the person you talk to about it as well.
