I was at a convention a few years ago and a subject brought up was transporting a tuba on the airlines.

A major point brought up was that most damage done to a horn is in the bell where there is so much compression in the brass that a minor hit will almost unwind the bell like a spring. For this reason, some manufacturers are shipping thir horns with a styrophone "mute like" insert to put down the bell. The idea is to increase mass to avoid the "spring-like" effect.

This can also be done by packing clothes down the bell.
