Mahler 5 is most definitely a Contrabass tuba part.

Bruckner in his seventh symphony actually indicates in the part and score that movements 1&3 are for the Bass Tuba and movements 2& 4 are for the Contrabass tuba. I have heard it performed this way many times and it adds vibrance and clarity to these movements. Surprisingly several of the Bruckner Symphonies work well on Bass or Contrabass tubas (4 and 6 come to mind). It all depends on the overall tonal concept of the brass section.
