You are correct! That was indeed the paper I saw. I must have looked at the pictures without reading the text.

Of course, valve placement is affected by the type of valve, because piston valves can be much closer together in the open bugle than can rotary valves. And it is also true that rotary tubas place the valves much farther along than piston tubas with straight-in leadpipes. So the effect is the same, as verified by my own comparisons, but I misattributed the cause.

And it is also worth noting that there was no conclusion about which was better--the smooth slurs of the rotary (trumpets, in this case) or the clean pop from note to note of the piston trumpet. I offer no conclusion regarding tubas, either.
