I do think that the overall maintenance of rotaries vs pistons is at least slightly in the advantage of the rotaries. You might encounter a sticky piston, and you might encounter a sticky rotary. However, one has to almost intentially attempt to get a sticky rotary. I've had a rotary for about 4 years, and only once have I had a sticky valve, and that was when I was unable to play the horn for about 3 months due to a ruptured lung... not really the fault of the horn. Rotaries are also easier to maintain in the short term, simply using sewing machine oil under the cap, on the posts, etc, and there is no removal/replacement of the pistons.

but then you get to the playing factors, which can be a completely different story.. =)
