I've almost never oiled the rotors on my Zeiss, and the thing worked just fine as long as I played it regularly.
But, if the situation Art described ever happens, it's far nicer to have something that can be fixed up in thirty seconds. Besides, it could be the money for the next month's rent that's on the line and not just pride.
