I stand by what I say. I don't understand why you think there would necessarily be any gap at all. 10" reels, 15ips (often 32ips) and splicing were the norm. That means anything could be (and was) done. When I did my listening, I also heard a noticeable difference in tape hiss - with headphones and the volume cranked. There were others - musicians - present. We all heard the same thing, drawing the same conclusion. Though the tape hiss was at a low level, it wasn't as quiet as levels achieveable today. I don't think the analogy using challenging technique on the euph relates here at all.
