Jeremy,

I am not an orchestral player but have experienced back pain due to tuba playing. My pain was caused from a number of things. First, I am very tall and my equipment was too small/short for me. This caused me to have bad posture. Bad posture strained my back and my neck, etc. I would suggest another person (aka. a teacher) take a look at your posture and see if it is ok, or even sit and play next to a large mirror. If by chance your equipment is too small for you, test different things to make it work. I tried a pilow on my knee at first and then ultimately bought a different horn.
Hope it helps,
TP
