If a great big tuba doesn't "sound" out-of-tune to all critical listeners, it isn't a problem...agreed?

I've always been EXTREMELY lucky in quintets (except for the odd engagement here or there) where everyone really worked diligently to come to a pitch concensus. My F hasn't been a problem in quintets...again, the particular F that I have works really well, and that's why I've kept it for 18 years but sold over a dozen CC's.

"awareness" vs. "problems" - Here is a summary of my observation:

Huge-belled tubas tend to sound in tune whether they are or not, and long-throated bells tend to more readily reveal their exact pitch to the average listener.
