I've heard some players who sound out of tune even on a big CC tuba. I've heard players who have dark sounds on whatever tuba they're playing and players who have brighter sounds. I agree that some players (and maybe to some extent tubas) have sounds that make pitch recognition easier. In my experience, trombone players like a tuba sound that they can hear the pitch and match and blend with easily. Many tuba players have such dark sounds that pitch is unrecognizable, yet will not sound as offensively out of tune as a brighter sound that is equally out of tune. So I guess I agree with you, except that I don't think that trombonists necessarily prefer out of tune dark sounds to in tune bright sounds.
