I would never council a talented musician against giving the professional thing a try. I would say, however, that it has been my experience that only those who are extremely talented and dedicated to the point of near insanity make it as a professional classical musician. Imagine all of the great tuba players out there and the lack of decent paying jobs. If you don't have it in you to practice, you probably don't have a snowballs chance in Hades of making it. It's just that competitive right now.

This is being told from the perspective of one who had talent and drive and was able to win auditions for low-paying professional jobs, but never landed a decent one.

For what it's worth,

Paul Evans
