I wouldn't base too many conclusions (though I agree with you completely) on Hogwood's group. I do not understand why groups think they are ready to record as soon as they can play the notes. The Academy of Ancient Music gets all the notes, but they play like historians. Nickolas Harnoncourt's Vienna group, on the other hand, play like musicians.

But I don't think it's an English thing. Still my favorite Beethoven series of all time is the one concucted on period instruments by Roger Norrington. English to the core, but very musical and utterly unlike The Academy of Ancient Music.
