This statement seems contradictory to me. If you play Eb for everything, then it is by definition a compromise. Is there no music written that works better on a contrabass than an Eb? Surely not. What about Wagner? He specified a contrabass, and using an Eb is a compromise. If you use an Eb on music that would sound (however marginally) better on a contrabass, then you have made a compromise. Just because it can be an effective, sensible, and reasonable choice doesn't mean that it isn't a compromise.

Most orchestra pros own several instruments. Why? Because they don't want to compromise. They could play everything on any one instrument, but not optimally.
