The particular university I attend seems to have a condition where every player wants to find the absolutely largest mouthpiece they can sustain a tone on and make any sound. Luckily, the PT88 is the largest one from Perantucci lol. There has been much discussion on this board about BATs (big ass tubas for you not-quite-so-frequent readers), but can someone discuss the fuzzy details of giant mouthpiece benefits?
Personally, I've been of the mind that one should play the largest mouthpiece possible until there is a loss of clarity/intonation or the loss of a certain sound required for a particular piece. But if indeed this is true, why are there so many models of 'small' mouthpieces available?
And no, I don't want this to turn into a "who plays what" kind of thread.
