Large m.p.'s certainly have their place. But like anything, they have their drawbacks as well adavantages. They do help in keeping one's tone "dark" at loud volumes. However, I find it harder to hold out water melons (long, sustained whole notes) without having to break up the note for breathing. In other words, my phrasing/breathing gets a bit choppier on huge m.p.'s. In addition, a huge m.p. can make your octaves smaller, which can cause some tuning problems if you're not careful to compensate in some way. I'm personally of the wide/shallow persuasion. However, with those, you have to be careful not to let your tone get too "bright" at loud volumes, or for your tone to become too "dry" sounding (lack of resonance from the horn). I used to use big toilet bowls for the German oompah band, but I've switched back to wide/shallow now that we're on mikes. Good question.
