No flames, just a disagreement. My information says that the work was specifically scored for cimbasso, not tuba. It just goes to show how different folks can come to different conclusions. In an earlier thread, Matt Good (tubist in Dallas) said that he prefers the sound of an F tuba for all of Brahms' works. There are many Brahms works that I would use a bass tuba on, like the German Requiem, but I much prefer the CC tuba for the 2nd Symphony, the Tragic Overture, and the Academic Festival Overture which we just played here last month. You don't play the CC like you would in a Mahler symphony but the CC feels much better to me for these works than a bass tuba.

The really great thing about this board is that we can communicate with each other and express our own viewpoints. This didn't happen much even 15 years ago. I think the added perspectives make all who participate in the debate much better. Thanks for sharing yours!

My opinion for what it's worth...
