I do something similiar with my band. Many times I increase the lenghth of the note to 20,24... counts to help with breathe control. I'm no pedagogical expert, but it seems to help. Even if the sound quality suffers some at the end of the note. Kids who couldn't even sustain a note for 16 counts have got to where they can cresc. for 12-16 then back down with good tone and pitch. A little off-topic,I have a tuba player who can circle breathe FLAWLESSLY! Good pitch, no drop in volume. So to those call circle-breathing a parlor trick I call BUNK! (I used to, but now I know different)
