Another shipping option is Amtrak, if buyer and seller are near a station. I just received a tuba shipped more than 2000 miles via Amtrak. Shipped Monday, here Wednesday. Shipper used a carton with foam sprayed into shape-fitting plastic bags--perhaps the same carton the horn was originally shipped in. Horn was in its case with no extra padding, but it came through fine.

Station agent said when I picked it up that Amtrak shouldn't have accepted the carton because it weighed 140 lbs. His mistake: most shippers charge "dimensional weight" on big cartons; mine actually weighed less than 40 lbs.

With Amtrak, if you can read a train status report online, you can track your shipment. Amtrak is an option I'll try next time I need to ship a tuba. Last one I shipped via FedEx Ground, but it could be split into two cartons. Usually tuba cartons are too big for UPS and FedEx.
