I honestly think that a great deal of tone (besides the obvious air) is the quantity of lip tissue inside the mouthpiece. That's why puckering more will get you a better tone up to a point, while puckering less will go the other way. The job is to find the amount of pucker (i.e., lip tissue) that gets you the tone you want. Your friend who uses the same mouthpiece....I bet she has less lip tissue inside it than you do. Sometimes when a person has thin (I don't mean the amount of red, but how "thick" the lips are if you hold them between thumb and finger) lips, going to a larger cup can give a better tone, if more pucker is not working.
