Seems to me, one of the best tuba sounds I ever heard on a Wagner recording was LA Phil with Leinsdorf doing Ring Music. This was on the first digital VINYL(dating myself at 39)disc, by I believe Telarc. Bobo layed down some massive tracks on a 186. I believe Wagner, or any music for that matter, can be done on a 4/4 size instrument, IF your concept of sound is, pardon the pun, sound. Has the arms race has escalated to the point in the tuba world to where this simple concept has been thrown aside for mere metal? I am not writing this to offend. Mr. Baer is a fabulous tuba player, and fabulous tuba players are going to sound good on a sewer pipe if need be, because they have a good, basic, concept of sound. After that is is instilled, perhaps equipment becomes the proverbial"icing on the cake". A good MUSICIAN will prevail, no matter what he blows into!!!!
