Just a correction on the conductor bit:
James Watson was Dykes conductor (now it is Nicholas Childs, Euphonium player)
Both James Gourlay (Faireys) and Bramwell Tovey (Fodens) are (were) top orchestral Tuba players who are now great and influential conductors. Also Ifor James (Besses) and Stephen Roberts are Horn players who have had great success (maybe not in competitions, but in sound and style)
