When I played Petrouchka under the direction of Igor Strawinsky conducting in 1954 or '55 with the Pittsburgh Symphony I found he was happy that I played the largest tuba he had seen. He said "Russian music requires the biggest possible tuba." Then I asked him about Bydlo. He said it is supposed to portray Russian ox cart and a singing peasant drive who would not sing in a cultured manner and that the biggest possible tuba should be used.
