I understand this point of view on this piece. I actually would say that I agree with it myself. But I also, at the same time don't. After all, this is an orhestration by a french composer, putting it, atleast partially, into the realm of early 20th century French music. Looking at it from this prespective, It seems that the idea of biggest tuba entirly incorrect, hence the entire debate we have. I think it was Rick Denny who suggested that maybe, just maybe, Ravel wanted 2 tubas used, a Russian BBb for most of the piece, and a French C for Bydlo. Wouldn't that be simular for how we do it now?
