Playing "in the zone"

Any thoughts on exactly what the term "playing in the zone" means?

I am interested (from a teaching perspective) in the effects on performance of muscle memory and confidence. Muscle memory (ie I've played a C scale so often I can do it in my sleep) certainly allows the brain to operate on a 'higher plane'.

I've also noticed an interesting phenomenon in my own playing whereby I can (not often, I'm afraid) create a mindset whereby time seems to move in slow motion: allowing my reactions (esp on fast passages) to be spot-on. Maybe just by subdividing the beat I'm looking at it under a microscope, so to speak?
