The tuba player was Mike Johnson (mentioned in 'Song and Wind' as the player with the largest vital capacity of us all). I don't know what instrument he used, but he is regularly on this site so perhaps he can tell you. On a different thread down here somewhere he listed the whole low brass section on that recording if you're interested in that too.
