At an event I was part of very recently, The Principal Sponsor of the evening (and noted a visiting international philanthropist) conducted the orchestra for a couple of numbers! Although clearly not a trained conductor or musician, it was interesting the passion he displayed. Naturally the orchestra had to do even more listening for "togetherness" thru the many tempo changes, rubato, etc.
The previous year he had sung with (another) orchestra, at this same event.
So, in some ways (though nowhere near as erm... *startling* as a FFJ performance) he had, in effect, hired himself a professional orchestra for [his part of] the evening.
