You mention a conductor "who has a beat that is indecipherable." I've always been a concert band geek. We usually see conductors (directors) who are really good at keeping time with the baton hand and giving entrances, dynamics, etc. with the other. I often wonder how you orchestral types can follow someone whose arm movements seem to have no connection with the music.
