Some of your information on the Texas All State system in not correct.

Any "district" band you may be in or may have auditioned for in not affiliated with TMEA.

The "official" all state program for the larger schools is TMEA. The smaller schools go through ATSSB (Assoc. of Texas Small School Bands). The TMEA process begins at the region level. Any student whose band director is a TMEA member may audition. In large regions, there are two rounds. In round one, all students (usually over 70 in a large region like those in Dallas and Houston) play all 3 etudes that usually come from Blazhevich or Kopprasch. A specific number (this varies depending on the size of region and 5A or 4A) of students will be asked to return the following week for round 2. This is still region. The top students from the region level (3 or 4) will then be approved to audition at area. Back "in the day," there was actually a "pre-area" step that further cut down the field. Unlike region, the area group does not present a concert...it's merely a formality to go to state. From there a group is selected to go to state (usually the top 3 from area). Students will then have to reaudition at state on band and orchestra excerpts that are mailed out about a month before the audition. THe audition at state is for chair placement only.
