I too use a tuba stand. At 6'2" 195lbs, I'm hardly small or unable to hold the tuba up. I find it really helpful for maintaining the same place for my face to be on the horn every time I play, no matter what chair I'm using. I really felt like it pumped up my consistency, and allowed me to keep things the same when I play. There is certainly no shame in using a stand. I'm no equipment junkie, but if I find a piece that could be advantageous, I'll certainly hop on board and try it.
