Having had experiences with All-State auditions in several states, I have a suggestion for the Texas system: include sightreading on the all-state audition. Those bands have very little time to rehearse, and those that can sightread well very often have strong levels of musicianship and technique required of All-State Musicians. If you can't play your axe, you can't sightread. Period. The best players usually can sightread well.
