No one in their right mind uses Bright Dip these days. It is chromic acid which is a heavy metal. Very toxic, very dangerous.
You are right that Bright Dip used to make the surface bright. It did remove material and left bright metal in its' place. Repair techs are always looking for ways to remove the lime and calcium deposits left when an instrument is played. We don't, however, look for toxic means to accomplish this. We, as a whole, are very conscious of the environment and the impact chemicals have upon it. For the most part, non-toxic chemicals do the job just as well and leave us and the environment for tomorrow.
