I learned F tuba on a Yamaha YFB621s. While it sure "sounds like an F," I had trouble playing it softly enough; it can get pretty raucous. I'm now using a Gronitz FP125 that I like very much. Given its large bore and 16 1/2" bell, it holds its own even in a large ensemble. Upper register is wonderful, and the lower register is great for an F tuba, especially if the tritone fifth valve extension is in place. I have to work harder to stay in tune, but the flexibility and the "pop out" high notes make the extra effort worthwhile.
