I have been playing tuba for about 5 years now. I have good technique and sight reading, but the thing i hear most is "open you sound". A lot of people, including my director, tell me i need to open my mouth more, like i'm sticking my hand in or something, but it just doesn't seem to help. I get so frustrated sometimes because the other tubas sound like tubas, and i kinda stick out, but not real badly. So my question is, how can i fix this problem??? Also, I've noticed that my lower register sounds a whole lot better than anything else, i get a lot of compliments on it actually. But i just can't figure out how to take that sound and stick it in the upper register, not even real high, either, like the middle Bb(second line on staff). If i can get some good feedback and fix this problem, it would be such a great uplifting experience, because the main thing about playing the tuba is having a great sound, right??? Thats what directors and audiences want to hear.
