I looked at a score...your first note should be a Bb below the staff. (Bb, A, G, Bb - All below the staff. If your part has ink that says that, then you have a separate tuba part. If the part is an octave up, then you have a contrabasson part and you need to play the whole thing an octave down.

This piece is kinda tough. It really is a contrabasson part. The first piece in Torchinsky's Strauss book is the Serenade Op. 7. Like it says in the book, when the Serenade is done at the University of Michigan, both Tuba and Contrbasson are used. The Tuba plays when the horns do, and the contrabasson plays when the ensemble is mostly woodwinds. Unfortunately, the Suite Op. 4 doesn't lend itself well to this type of splitting up. This part is mainly played with the woodwinds. So, your best bet is to be prepared to play very softly. A tuba will be overpowering in this Suite if the player is not really on top of things.

This is a great piece...have fun with it!
