I will second Dan's comment and add that sometimes there can be very small scratches on the rim that don't show brass but can be rough on the chops over an extended period.
I sometimes find that another cause is the high amount of playing at the start of the marching season. Not everyone plays 2-3 hours a day during the summer so when they attempt to play a lot in late August - early September they have problems. The only solution I know of for this is to play more during the summer.
