Now I will retreat from the subjective to the technical:
It occurs to me that what is lacking in the sound of HB tubas is much of any of the (very pleasing to the ear) twelfth partial ringing in the sound. I kind of think that when we do find that the tone quality of a tuba has "character", that it is actually a prominent 12th partial ringing that is making us smile.
