But we have to remember that Berlioz was working with very limited resources when SF was written and was trying to make the best of a problematical situation. So he felt that the lower ophi could be replaced by a bass tuba, but he kept the second ophi to retain some edge in the bass.

We can only speculate what Berlioz would have done if he had access to the rich variety of brass we have today. Probably scored the whole thing for bassbones...ain't nothing like a couple of chainsaws to make you think you're hallucinating...

On a very related topic, what instrumentation is recommended for the ophi parts in the Symphonie Funebre et Triomphale? Euph and contrabass tuba?
