I would put another vote toward the VMI. I found another dent/scratch just like the one you're considering at BW for a student of mine, and it turned out to be a very easy playing horn with hardly any intonation problems and a nice big sound suitable for band or anything else your freshman is likely to encounter for a good while. Both Matt and Mike are great to do business with, and I'm sure the King is also a fine horn, but Matt has even endorsed the VMI to me as a great horn for a student for the price, Mike just happens to have more of a B-stock inventory with some nice deals to be had.
